What are radar detectors?
In order to catch a driver speeding, there are various devices used
by law enforcement, which emit various types of radio signals that
enable them to calculate your speed. Radar/laser detectors are
nifty bits of equipment that alert you (audibly or visually) to
the presence of these devices by picking up the various signals
emitted.
How does a speed trap or Gatso camera work?
All speed trap devices operate by sending out radio signals which
are reflected by the target back to the device which calculates
speed from there. A radar signal is conical in shape much like
a torch beam. The signal can be as wide as a dual carriageway.
How does a detector help?
Most of the naughty signals go past the target and on up the road
reflecting off things becoming 'radar scatter'. Radar detectors
pick up this scatter and warn the driver! The range and band at
which they pick up the signals varies according
to the model. Some detectors even know where static cameras and the
new SPECS traps are via GPS positioning.
Are radar detectors legal?
Radar detectors are completely legal to sell and use in the UK! Whilst
they may still work abroad, you must check the local laws before
using your detector, as they are illegal in some countries, for
example France and Belgium!
Do US radar detectors work in the UK?
Yes and no, frequencies, bands and specifications differ between
the UK and the US, to ensure you get the right protection get a
UK and Europe specified detector!
What is a radar band?
All of the newer radar detectors have a 5-band detection. These include
the x band, which is an older band and is not widely used in the
UK anymore. This is also the frequency on which most false alarms
occur. The K band is used by GATSO cameras and most hand held guns.
The ‘stalker’ guns use the Ka band, and finally, MiniGatso
cameras in the UK use the Ku band. Whether and how they detect
each band determines the price of the unit. This is what makes
expensive ones more effective and why there are more false alerts
on cheaper ones
What are the SPECS speed traps?
Basically the SPECS system monitors the average speed of your car
as it passes over a fixed distance between two cameras. The cameras
are digital and do not "flash" like conventional fixed
point cameras plus they use infra red technology to monitor speeds
at night. Linked together via computer they take a digital image
of every vehicle that passes by, speeding or not. They find out
who you are instantly by number plate recognition, SPECS cameras
are linked to the DVLA or PNC computers! Everyone gets busted,
and it can store details of up to 20,000 speeding vehicles at
a time!
Unlike Gatsos, SPECS cameras have no film to run out,
operators
have to make less journeys to the site and it takes a picture
of the front
of the vehicle, allowing them to identify the driver if needed,
so you wont be able to get your Mrs to take the points for you!
It has
no flash, and is much harder to spot. In fact its almost impossible
to avoid, because it’s an average speed system you cant slow
down and speed up like everybody does at a gatso, this is why they
were invented, Gatsos are dangerous!
Will my speed trap detector
alert me to the SPECS cameras?
It depends which one you have. As SPECS cameras do not determine
your speed via a laser or radar signal, basic radar and laser
detectors will not pick up their location. However, as SPECS
are fixed cameras
(their location not secret!), GPS co-ordinates are stored in
the GPS speed trap detectors such as the Snooper S6 and Road
Angel,
which will then alert the driver to their presence, they identify
the type
of trap you are in! GPS detectors can be updated via the web,
so you can always ensure your protection is 100%.
What is the difference between a £60 and £600
detector?
Obviously, the more expensive the system the better it is. This
is not to say that the less expensive models are useless though!
The
more expensive detectors tend to emit less false alarms and the
range at which laser and radar signal is detected is greater.
More advanced models are even updated via a modem and GPS positioning.
Why should I buy a radar detector?
Speeding fines are now a massive revenue for the government, so why
risk fines of up to £1200, penalty points on your licence,
or even a ban when you can spend as little as a couple of hundred
quid on an effective detector? Hey, wouldn’t you rather help
Radar Girl buy a new outfit than those government types?
What about laser jammers then?
Laser jammers are slightly different in that they not only detect
the laser signal but also temporarily and harmlessly stop the laser
gun getting a reading from your vehicle. They are effective against
all laser guns and laser/camera traps but not radar. Whilst there
isn’t a specific law stating they are illegal to sell, fit
or use at the moment it’s a big grey area. Purchasers must
satisfy themselves as to legalities.
How does Radargirl know so much about radar detectors?
Our parent company has been distributing them for over 6 years!
